Hosepipe Rocking Chair by Sander Bokkinga for BOK, Netherlands, 2020s
A unique rocking chair designed by Dutch designer Sander Bokkinga for BOK in the 2020s. Combining natural oak with original black hosepipe, the piece transforms familiar industrial materials into a playful yet highly sculptural seating object.
The design is characterized by its expressive construction, where lengths of hosepipe twist, wrap, and loop around the frame to create both structure and visual identity. What appears spontaneous at first glance reveals a carefully engineered composition, balancing comfort, stability, and movement within a highly distinctive form.
The natural oak seat and backrest provide warmth and material richness, with the visible grain and handcrafted finish emphasizing the organic character of the wood. In contrast, the black hosepipe introduces an industrial aesthetic, while the brass fittings remain intentionally visible as a subtle reference to the material’s original utilitarian purpose.
Mounted on solid oak rockers, the chair gains an additional layer of functionality and sculptural presence. Blurring the boundaries between furniture, sculpture, and conceptual design, the piece exemplifies Bokkinga’s unique approach to material experimentation and contemporary Dutch craftsmanship.
