Table Lamp “Valigia” by Ettore Sottsass for Stilnovo, Italy, 1977
Designed by Ettore Sottsass for Stilnovo in 1977, the Valigia (Italian for “suitcase”) is one of the most recognizable icons of Italian postmodern lighting. With its curved black metal body resting on vibrant red tubular legs, the lamp exudes a sense of humor and optimism as if ready to travel, a portable piece of design poetry.
The playful form masks a deeply considered balance of proportion and geometry, a hallmark of Sottsass’s work. The Valigia captures his vision of design as both functional and emotional an object that carries joy, movement and identity.
About the designer
Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007) was one of the most influential Italian architects and designers of the 20th century. Founder of the Memphis Group in 1981, he redefined modern design through color, irony, and emotion breaking free from rational minimalism. His work for brands like Olivetti, Alessi, and Stilnovo embodies his belief that design should “speak to the soul.” The Valigia lamp stands as a perfect example of this philosophy both serious and playful, architectural yet poetic.
